Tour :: Richard Ashcroft Gig

Jyrojets opened for Richard Ashcroft at Glasgow SECC on the 29th of November to a sell out audience. During his encore Ashcroft called them 'a great young band'.

He is one of the band's heroes and they had already bought tickets, never dreaming that they would actually be opening the show in front of 10,000 people.  They also gave an interview to Scottish Television (STV) during the show which you can watch here.

jyrojets have only been together since March 2004 but have already headlined the BBC Radio Scotland stage at the Belladrum Festival, had airplay on Radio 1 and Radio Scotland, supported the Kaiser Chiefs, had a track featured on Channel 4's Make Tracks CD, performed live on Moscow radio, been mobbed at a festival in Spain and have made history by becoming the first Inverness band ever to sign a major record deal.

They describe their sound as a heavy kick of Nirvana with Simon & Garfunkel harmonies, Beatlesque melodies and plenty of attitude.

When they were 14, while sheltering from the pissing rain at a bus stop, drinking a bottle of Buckfast and listening to Nirvana with one earphone each, Colin Fraser and Martin Stewart decided to start a band. The two set about writing songs and after a few years of trying out various line-ups, they finally hooked up with three like-minded musicians and Jyrojets was born.

After just a month of rehearsing seven nights a week, the band recorded a demo and competed for a chance to play at T in the Park. They performed at King Tuts in Glasgow in the T-break heats. They won the Inverness Battle of the Bands and got a billing at the Belladrum festival.

Spotted by a promoter, jyrojets were invited to play a festival in Spain. They followed this with a Moscow gig where the Russians loved them. While they were there, the band played an acoustic live radio session with 7 million listeners tuning in.

Their first big break came when we at Songphonic heard their tracks showcased on a CD distributed by Music Week. We asked them to send some more material, loved what we heard and flew to Inverness to see the band live.  After a joint jam session at our studios we struck a world-wide multi album and publishing deal.

With our backing, the band was able to give up their 'day' jobs and focus on music full time.  During the past 12 months we have been recording their debut album and released their debut EP to critical acclaim in 2006.

Jyrojets were originally incubated by Highlands & Islands Development Agency who nurture and support Scottish talent.
